Our Mission & History

Mission

To lead in increasing opera’s reach by engaging, inspiring, and educating the community.

We are bringing opera to the community by way of free concerts, workshops, opera screenings, masterclasses, a community opera chorus, and more! We hope to bring people together, to help people build confidence through singing and movement, to break social isolation, to be inclusive and accessible for all, and to spark creativity.

History

Opera Lirica is a Vancouver-based company founded by artistic director Trudy Chalmers in 2014 under the name Opera Opulenza. Together with music director Roger Parton, Trudy has created a company dedicated to providing singers with opportunities to perform in concerts, films, main-stage operas, and opera scenes. The company is also dedicated to community engagement, offering free concerts, workshops, kids opera day camps, and a community opera chorus. Mainstage operas performed are Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana in 2016 and Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann in 2017 at the York Theatre in Vancouver. Opera Lirica currently maintains an artist residency at Oak Park Fieldhouse through the Vancouver Park Board.
